There was a certain amount of excitement on this board, but what do you do now and what does it show ?

2:

2 ? 3 ?

3: A hand we got horribly wrong and were lucky to only lose 2 imps. It raised the following questions.

(2 natural weak)-2-(P)-2 is this forcing ? Is 3 instead of 2 big natural and forcing, splinter or fit (we play a fair few fit jumps in our system)

4:

Pass or double ? 2 is classical natural weak 5-9 6cs (sorry vul wrong, is love all)]]>

Playing as a single in tournaments that use the GIB conventions, one often encounters players who make very bad bids. It’s hard to understand why, as the meaning of a bid is clearly displayed.

To help players become better bidders, an interesting idea would be to assign a bidding skill score to players based upon the percentage of bids that they make that conform to the GIB conventions. This would help people to learn to use the conventions and enjoy playing more. It would also help partners by suggesting how well a player’s bid could be trusted.

A simple percentage of correct bids would work. Obviously, this would only apply to tournaments that use the GIB conventions. Player rating has been discussed here for a long time, this might be implementable for GIB bidding.]]>

variable NT https://www.bridgebase.com/forums/topic/91558-variable-nt/ In ACBL world, is there any rule that prohibits my NT range from being 13-15 if my shape is 5332 and the range is 10-13 if my shape is not 5332 ? A very anomalous hand https://www.bridgebase.com/forums/topic/91555-a-very-anomalous-hand/

I'd read on here something about the value of aggressively pre-empting so decided to apply it here. South gave the wrong Blackwood response and North said afterwards he would have bid the grand if South had showed one key card. Given at this club, I doubt anyone else would have opened my hand and therefore NS would have had a free ride, I'd have thought this should have been around average at least.

Sadly not, NS got 80% on this board. The full traveller:

3NT N +4 four times; +720
4NT S +2 once; +690
3NT N +3 twice; +690
6NT N = twice; +1440
6 S +1; +1390 (South took the double spade finesse through me and found the perfect lie of the cards.)

Then there was this one:
2 N +2; +170

I cannot comprehend how they ended up there and I think this is the strongest combined pair of hands I have ever seen that has played in a part score.

This also illustrates an issue with playing in an erratic field when the cards are loaded against you (my average HCP 9.0 across 22 boards), frequently you can be at the mercy of silly nonsense such as this and it can be a struggle to generate much. We ended up coming first EW which was a pleasant surprise, normally in sessions like this I am doing well to get much above 50%.]]>

splinter, 2 over one, or inverted raise? https://www.bridgebase.com/forums/topic/91553-splinter-2-over-one-or-inverted-raise/ Ax

My question is, should I bid 2C (2 over 1 forcing), 2D (inverted minor raise), or 3H (a splinter bid)? I have heard the adages "show your game force when you can", and "show your partner a fit when you can". If I bid 2C, I show the game force, but it becomes difficult to ever get partner to see I have 5 diamonds. If I bid 2D, I show the fit, and something about my distribution, but don't confirm my strength. With a splinter (is this an accepted practice with inverted minors) it shows both, and shows further a very good description of my distribution. Your comments, advice is welcome!]]>
